Tatara Systems’ Receives CTIA WIRELESS 2007 Emerging Technology Award

03/29/2007 - ORLANDO, FL – Tatara Systems, a leader in mobile convergence, today announced that its femtocell convergence solution was selected as the 1st place winner of the CTIA 2007 Emerging Technology (E-Tech) Award at CTIA WIRELESS 2007 for the “Network Infrastructure: In-Building/Local Area Network Solution” category. Winners were announced yesterday at an award ceremony at the Orange County Convention Center during the show.

The CTIA E-Tech Awards program is designed to give industry recognition and exposure to the best wireless products and services in the areas of consumer, enterprise and network technology. More than 225 applications were submitted and reviewed by a panel of recognized members of the media, industry analysts and technology experts. Products in four categories: hardware, consumer applications, enterprise solutions and network infrastructure, were judged on innovation, functionality, vision, technological importance and implementation.

“The E-Tech awards program continues to grow and showcase innovative products that extend wireless offerings to consumers and enterprises,” said Robert Mesirow, vice president and show director for CTIA WIRELESS. “On behalf of CTIA, we congratulate Tatara Systems on their award and look forward to their continued innovation in the field of Network Infrastructure: In-Building/Local Area Network Solution.”

The Tatara Convergence Server, at the center of its femtocell convergence solution, is the industry’s first SIP-based FMC application server to focus on an all-IP approach to core network integration for femtocells. While there are several legacy architectural approaches for deploying femtocell-based solutions, the all-IP architecture utilizes standard communication protocols (i.e. SIP) and interfaces directly with both the mobile and the IP-based core networks. This allows service providers to immediately achieve the end-to-end cost and service advantages that only an all-IP approach can deliver rather than being constrained by the historical limitations of traditional radio access network based solutions. The all-IP approach provides all of the existing mobile services plus enhanced IP services, wireline service convergence, reduction in network cost, seamless evolution to IMS, and load reduction on the mobile core network.

The Tatara Convergence Server integrates a SIP-based femtocell access point into the mobile operator’s core network delivering key capabilities of the service, including: updating the user’s location to the femtocell in order to enable voice services, providing full messaging services such as SMS, ensuring end-users have access to the same set of supplementary services (e.g. call forwarding and USSD services) on the femtocell network that they have on the macro cellular network, and handoff between the femtocell and the macro cellular networks. In addition, the Tatara Femtocell Convergence Solution will play a key role in enabling enhanced IP services through a femtocell, such as SIP-based access to personal home network content.

“This CTIA E-Tech award is a testament to the huge impact that femtocells are having on the mobile market,” stated Steve Nicolle, President & CEO of Tatara Systems. “It further validates Tatara’s all-IP approach of femtocell integration and the innovation we have put into our product portfolio.”

About Femtocell Technology
A femtocell, also known as a 3G access point, is a low-cost, low-power cellular base station that provides improved indoor coverage while backhauling the cellular traffic over a broadband connection. Femtocells are designed to work with existing mobile handsets and can support multiple users in a home environment. Over the long-term, femtocells also present an opportunity to develop new mobile services for the home that take advantage of low-cost, high-speed internet access.
